“Lost Desire”
By Meleager

Love brought by night a vision to my bed,
One that still wore the vesture of a child
But eighteen years of age – who sweetly smiled
Till of the lovely form false hopes were bred
And keen embraces wild.

Ah! for the lost desire that haunts me yet,
Till mine eyes fail in sleep that finds no more
That fleeting ghost! Oh, lovelorn heart, give o’er –
Cease thy vain dreams of beauty’s warmth – forget
The face thou longest for!

Strike while the iron is hot.”

Origin: This saying refers to the blacksmith who works with iron. First he heats the iron until it is red hot and soft. Then he immediately hits the iron with his hammer to change its shape. If he waits, the iron becomes cold and hard again, and he cannot shape it.

On a scale of one to ten, how miserable are you?
It’s probably tough to say, but believe it or not misery has an economic element and is, to an extent, objectively qualifiable. Using a variety of statistics (which can be found in greater detail here) Forbes magazine recently ranked the ten most miserable cities in America.  The results can be found here, so if you’re planning a family vacation you may want to stay away from these places... Unless of course they’re ranked lower on the list than the city where you live.
